Training Program FAQs

Q: I have never run or walked an organized race event before, can I really train to run or walk my 5K, half marathon or full marathon?
A:
Many of our runners and walkers have never been avid runners before, and that's just how we like it. Most people, even with no prior experience, can finish a marathon - provided they follow a structured and progressive training program start to finish, without falling off of the training program (see question #3 for our recommendations for our programs).  It is a matter of future commitment more than a matter of previous experience.  We are extremely confident in our coaches, philosophies, and programs, they are designed to be used with any ability level.  As long as you commit to the training, we will get you in the right group to succeed.

Q: Where and when do the programs meet?
A: Each program is different.  We offer all our programs on both the west and east/south side.  West Side programs meet on Tuesdays at 6:00PM and Saturdays at 8:00AM.  East/South Side programs meet on Wednesdays at 6:00PM and Saturdays at 8:00AM.  This allows participants to attend the other weekday run if they can't make their scheduled one.  Locations vary based on the program and may change during the program.  The program coach will communicate all run locations in the weekly coaching email.

Q: I feel like I might be very slow compared to others, what if I can't keep up with the rest of the group?
A: 
Our programs are designed to teach you to finish, not to necessarily do it fast. Don’t worry about your speed. We accept runners and walkers of all paces and abilities and will have pace groups to match the ability levels of those in our program.  We do recommend that those registering for our half marathon program are comfortable completing 3 miles and those registering for the full marathon are comfortable completing 5 miles (it doesn't need to be speedy), just to make the transition to training more comfortable. 

Q: What is the cost of the registration?
A: Each training program has a different fee, which is detailed on the training program’s web page. The fee typically covers swag, RRCA insurance, prizes, giveaways, coupons, incentives, expert coaching and mentor assistance. The fee does not typically cover race registration.

Q: I am a walker. Is this still the right program for me?
A: Our NO BOUNDARIES 5K training programs are walker-friendly.  Distance programs are usually targeted at runners or those who plan to run/walk the distance. If you have any questions, please contact Angela to discuss your goals and how our programs can help you achieve them. 

Q: If I am already running the program’s distance, but I am looking for a group to train with is this program right for me?
A: Yes. Depending on the program, the coaches can also work with you to fine-tune the program to better fit your goals. Typically, if you’re already covering the distance, we can work on building strength and stamina rather than focusing on building endurance. For example, we may help you with incorporating speed workouts into your plan.

Q: If I miss workouts or I have to consistently miss one of the days of our weekly meetings, does that mean I cannot be involved in the program?
A: Of course you can still be involved! We would love to have every trainee at every run, but we understand that life and obligations may get in the way. Just make sure that you are completing your training runs independently so you don’t fall behind on your progress! Also, let your coach and mentors know when you expect to miss so we don’t worry about you!
